If you’re looking for a peaceful woodland escape in Cornwall that combines natural beauty with good accessibility, Cardinham Woods is a fantastic choice. Just outside Bodmin, this Forestry England site offers gentle riverside walks, scenic cycle routes, and all-terrain mobility access perfect for visitors of all abilities who want to enjoy Cornwall’s countryside.
Getting There & Parking
Cardinham Woods is easy to find, located around 2 miles east of Bodmin (postcode PL30 4AL). It’s well signposted from the A38 and A30.
There’s a large main car park right at the entrance with clearly marked Blue Badge spaces. The surface is firm gravel and tarmac, and the path from the parking area to the visitor facilities is mostly level.
You’ll find ticket machines close to the accessible bays, and Forestry England members can park for free. The area also has picnic benches, including ones with space for wheelchair users.
Accessibility & Mobility Support
Cardinham Woods is part of the Countryside Mobility scheme, offering access to a Tramper all-terrain mobility scooter. This allows visitors with limited mobility to enjoy even the longer trails through the forest.
The Tramper can be hired from the Ranger’s Hut (next to the car park), and you don’t need to be registered disabled to use one, just aged 14 or over and able to operate it safely. Booking ahead is essential, especially during weekends and holidays.
There’s also an accessible toilet behind the Ranger’s Hut, with a wide doorway (around 1m), manual door, and baby changing facilities. No radar key is required.
Facilities at the Visitor Area
- Café: The lovely Woods Café offers homemade cakes, lunches, and drinks, with indoor and outdoor seating. Access is step-free, though some outside areas have gravel surfaces.
- Play Area: There’s a woodland-themed play zone for children beside the café. Some play equipment has steps, but the approach paths are accessible.
- Toilets: Standard and accessible toilets are located behind the Ranger’s Hut, a short level walk from the car park.
- Picnic Areas: There are accessible picnic benches scattered around the car park and riverside, ideal for a rest stop.
Accessible Trails & Walks
Cardinham Woods is famous for its scenic trails, which range from short, easy routes to longer, hilly circuits. Here’s what you can expect:
Lady Vale Walk
- Distance: 2.4 km (1.5 miles)
- Terrain: Level riverside path with hard-packed gravel surface
- Time: Around 45 minutes at a gentle pace
- Accessibility: Excellent – suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs, and Trampers
This is the most accessible trail in Cardinham Woods. It follows the stream through beautiful woodland, crossing a traditional clapper bridge and passing shaded picnic spots. It’s ideal for visitors who prefer flat terrain and an easy, scenic route.
Callywith Wood Walk
- Distance: 4.3 km (2.7 miles)
- Terrain: Fully surfaced forest track with a few moderate slopes
- Time: Around 1 hour
- Accessibility: Good – ideal for Tramper users and those comfortable with slight inclines
This loop takes you through a peaceful forest and up to higher ground, where you’ll find great views over the valley. It’s a lovely route for those who want a little more distance while still staying on firm, even ground.
Wheal Glynn Walk
- Distance: 4.2 km (2.5 miles)
- Terrain: Forest and open tracks with some uphill sections
- Time: 1.5 hours
- Accessibility: Moderate – manageable on a Tramper or with a sturdy walking aid
Named after the historic Wheal Glynn mine, this route combines woodland walking with glimpses of old mining remains. It’s a little steeper in places, so a Tramper or confident mobility-aid user is recommended.
Deviock Trail
- Distance: 6 km (4 miles)
- Terrain: Mixed woodland and hill paths
- Time: 1.5–2 hours
- Accessibility: Challenging – not suitable for standard wheelchairs
A more adventurous option for those using an all-terrain scooter or wanting a proper workout. Expect a few steep climbs, rougher surfaces, and some of the forest’s best panoramic views.
For Families & Dogs
Cardinham Woods is a family-friendly destination with something for everyone. Dogs are welcome on all trails (on leads, please), and there are dog water bowls and waste bins around the site.
The riverside walks are great for families with buggies or small children, and the café’s outdoor area is dog-friendly.
Tips for Your Visit
- Book the Tramper in advance. You can do this through the Countryside Mobility website.
- Check the weather. After heavy rain, even surfaced trails can become muddy or slippery.
- Start easy. The Lady Vale Walk is ideal for first-time visitors or those using a Tramper for the first time.
- Ask the rangers for advice. They’re knowledgeable and can suggest routes based on your needs and the day’s conditions.
- Bring change for parking (or download the RingGo app for cashless payment).
Why You’ll Love Cardinham Woods
Cardinham Woods is one of Cornwall’s most tranquil natural spots, a place where accessibility doesn’t mean missing out on adventure. Whether you’re gliding along the riverside path on a Tramper, enjoying a picnic under the trees, or taking in the view from Callywith Hill, it’s a truly inclusive woodland experience.
Peaceful, scenic, and thoughtfully designed, Cardinham Woods shows how nature can be open to everyone.
