Nestled within one of the world’s finest collections of conifer trees, the Bedgebury National Pinetum Trail offers an outstanding accessible outdoor experience for walkers of all abilities. With both a shorter and longer circular route, excellent visitor facilities, and beautiful lakeside scenery, it is one of the most inclusive woodland destinations we have visited. Recommended by Need2Change

Whether you’re looking for a gentle stroll beneath towering redwoods or a longer scenic adventure through internationally significant woodland, Bedgebury provides a welcoming environment that is suitable for wheelchair users, families, and visitors with mobility needs.

Trail Overview

Visitors can choose between two clearly waymarked circular routes:

  • Short Loop: 0.8 miles (1.25 km)
  • Long Loop: 1.5 miles (2.4 km)

Both trails are designed to offer an enjoyable woodland experience while remaining accessible to a wide range of visitors.

Accessibility

The shorter route features moderate gradients with a smooth, firm surface and very little loose material, making it suitable for many wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

The longer loop includes longer moderate inclines and occasional sections with loose surface material, but remains well-maintained throughout.

Both trails offer:

  • Minimum path width of approximately 1.5 metres
  • No steps or narrow barriers
  • Clearly defined routes with good navigation
  • Two wide gates on the longer loop that comfortably accommodate wheelchairs

The overall design allows visitors to explore the pinetum with confidence while enjoying uninterrupted woodland scenery.

Excellent Visitor Facilities

Bedgebury stands out for the quality of its accessible facilities.

Parking

Ten Blue Badge parking bays are located nearest the Visitor Centre, connected by a gently sloping route of around 150–180 metres.

Accessible Toilets

The Visitor Centre provides:

  • Accessible toilet facilities
  • A fully equipped Changing Places toilet with a wash-and-dry system
  • Wide door access throughout

Seating

Benches and resting perches are positioned regularly along both loops, with several benches featuring armrests and adjacent level spaces so wheelchair users can rest alongside companions.

Mobility Scooter Hire

Three all-terrain mobility scooters are available to hire with advance booking, allowing more visitors to enjoy the wider forest network.

Helpful staff, indoor seating, and an induction loop at the information point further enhance the visitor experience.

The trails showcase some of the UK’s most spectacular specimen trees within a peaceful and carefully maintained landscape.

Visitors can enjoy:

  • Towering giant redwoods
